Bluebird on the Garden Gate Quilt

My SIL asked me to make her a quilt tailored to a specific space, color and theme. (Aaaaccckk!)
It needed to be 27 by 36 inches, the theme - a bluebird in a garden, and she gave me a decorative plate to use to pick the colors she loves.

It took some searching for fabrics that had the right colors. The fabric I used for building the hollyhocks is done in a technique called broderie perse applique, where you cut out a motif from one fabric and applique it to another background. I posted a picture of that at the end. It isn't fabric I would have ever wanted to buy otherwise. I also used Inktense pencils to add a little bit of realism, highlights and shadows to the appliqued shapes. Dawn (sewnsewer2) made the beautiful label for the back.

Oh! That is SO beautiful!!! Such beautiful fabrics! Was the bird a whole piece from a fabric? Can you tell us more about the fabrics, e.g. the blue background, the white fence, the flower fabric and the border fabrics....were they all from a specific fabric line? I know that's a lot to ask.....you did such a beautiful job, so inspiring!!!

I'd pay you a compliment but I am busy getting my jaw off the floor. It dropped real hard when I saw the beauty of your quilt.

Wow Lara. Very impressive!!!! So, you cut the flowers out and then shaded them with Inktense pencils? Your hollyhocks are exquisite. I will have to look that technique up.

Thank you so much everyone! I was very insecure about my SIL displaying the quilt and you gave me a boost of courage.

Cindy had her dining area repainted and wanted a quilt for the space above her sideboard. Here is a picture of the plate she loved for its colors. You can see why I used a dark blue background, which isn't your usual sunny bluebird garden scene... LOL
