They'll get two books each--and these. :D Both sides have strips. It was a bit bulky to steam-a-seam, but I was able to cover their interests better. I'll go back to single fabric backs now.

Their interests include: soccer, football, baseball, cats, dogs, horses, snails, frogs, butterflies, nature. And, to remember their 5th grade year, I put some red, white, and blue on every one--to remember the historic election year and the beloved Election Journal project.

Lisa--do you see the three with braids you so kindly sent me?

Pictures show one side, then the other.

Karla - have you ever explained to us how you do those? Yours look so thin & the few I made are always so bulky. What's your secret - they sure are cool!

Snow day! So I have time to explain. :D I use an 8" piece of muslin to start. Use fabric strips of varying widths. Place two strips on the muslin on the diagonal. Place one strip on top of the other--right sides together and sew down one side. I use less than 1/4" seam. Then iron the top strip out. Now add strips and iron until your sqauare is full. Then take it to your cutting mat--turn it over and trim to 8.25". Then cut the square into three rectangles each 2.75". Cut a back to fit. (for students I used striped rectangles for back--but I don't recommend it--bit too bulky in the corners) Lay right sides together and sew around the edge--leaving a spot for turning. Steam-a-seam closed, add grommet, tassel, beads...and you're done. :D

My quilting forum buddies gave me the bookmark idea, along with adding grommets, tassels, and beads.
