I have the same thought - except to have it 3 tiered =
a thin, light strip, followed by a thin gold strip,followed by a royal blue or dark blue strip and then the wide border the same colour as your quilt background. It would be even better if the thin strips could be 'peepers' so that they are folded in half and not sewn down except on the seam.That way they would look like a matt around a framed picture, Just a suggestion.
