Carolina Byways Mini Quilt
This summer I found a link Craftybear posted for a split nine patch design named Carolina Byways: http://quilting.about.com/od/quiltpa...tninepatch.htm Thanks Crafty Bear!
I swept away by how beautifully Janet Wickell used prints to achieve the look of misty mountains. Our daughter and her fiance just moved to North Carolina for grad school and I knew I wanted to make them one in honor of the huge changes they made in their lives.
Here is my rendition done with a greater number of blocks - all 1" instead of the 3" blocks in the same 16 x 16 format. I did not stick to the perfect split nine patch layout because I wanted the mountains a little more staggered. It is a controlled scrappy using only Barbara Brackman's Morris & Company fabrics, which I adore. Despite my best efforts to keep the squares lined up right, it still came out a little wonky. My lines start to drift as I sew down the quilt. Does anyone know how to avoid having that happen?
My daughter and I also wrote a short poem together called Carolina Byways and i put that on the label, which is also shown below.

Hang on... I need to pick my jaw up off the floor! This is STUNNING! Repeat... GORGEOUS! I've seen that pattern before but never done as beautifully as you executed it! Wow! Great job! And best of luck to your kids in grad school!
