Willie Mae, thank you for sharing this. The subject line caught my attention, and I was thinking what on earth is chicken scratch. But then the pictures.
Many years ago my grandmother taught all 4 of her granddaughters to do this, although none of us remember what she called it, and she's no longer with us to ask. Now I will be trying this again, if only to remember her. Thanks you so much.

I bought a blue top one at a yard sale for 10.00.
I am thinking about applying a flower across the top. It looks boring. would that ruin my quilt? I think it was hand done. Tell me if you think I am crazy.

Beautiful work. I tried this several years ago. My sister was really into chicken scratching. :-) Just wasn't for me. Too Tense. Kept pulling thread too tight. Your work is great.
