The orcas are done with fusible (heat'n bond lite) and then machine satin stitched to the background.

One more question: when you made the orcas, are they cut out of black and white fabric and bonded together and then stitched on?? The reason I ask is because I've done a number of pieces with applique work and I know those little pieces get to be tricky to work with, whether it's with the iron -- so I don't burn my fingers, or the actual blanket-stitch, I usually make it a little shorter and closer together on the small pieces.
