Default Crumb quilt

I have had 20 fat quarters in my stash waiting for inspiration and last month I took class at my LQS from Nancy Chong for her crumb quilt. This pattern is great for fat quarters and the goal is to use all of your crumbs up. The fabric is from Laurel Burch Holiday Celebrations collection and I used cream of 4 of the prints to make the square/rectangle for base of the squares (tree, deer, cats and bird/ornaments). All of the beginning squares are cut to different sizes, some square and some rectangle. The rest of the fabrics are striped and sewn back together and then stripped again before sewing to original squares. Strips are added in totally random fashion and blocks come out in different sizes. The blocks are even sewn into quilt in random pattern and not always facing up and then your crumbs are used to fill in spaces between blocks and complete the quilt. Really had fun making this and will be making at least 2 more; 1 in music theme and 1 in train theme for my sons.

Fat quarters are not crumbs. My scrap quilts are made from small pieces left over from other quilts or garment sewing. I have been saving these crumbs for years. I sew together the two smallest ones I can see . Trim one side of these two to add another piece. When the piece gets larger, make strips by sewing little pieces together. I use anything that is at least 1/2 inch wide as I make 1/8 in. seams.
