I started about 5 years ago with our first long arm. I did many practice quilts. I would throw up big pieces of fabric and just doodle all over them. Some of my firsts turned out pretty good. They did say you should put in about 100 hours of practice, but I did alot of drawing out designs to get the mental memory built up. That helps alot. Feathers was my hardest thing to learn. It took me almost 6 months of drawing it to actually get them right. I bought a cd from Adam Chevrone(spelling?) and he breaks it all down with some practice drawings and that is what helped me get those to how I like them. I didn't do anything for anyone else for the first three years. I wanted to get all the practice in I could and made lots of charity quilts and quilts for friends. For each person it will vary. My mom isn't as artistic but she can do stipples and swirls way better than I can...lol. I really think it goes on how much you practice and don't be afraid to try it. The worst that can happen is that you aren't happy with it, but someone else will love it. Great charity quilts!!!!
