I did some more research on the pattern. The basic small fan block can be set in so many ways, similar to the multitude of log cabin sets. The others I have seen have a solid in the corner as the base of the fan, then scrapy and a contrasting color for the rest of the block. Some had fans in opposite corners.

With the blocks set in diagonal lines like yours (minus the snakes' heads) it is "Falling Timbers."

Ciba Vaughan, in Romantic Patchwork & Quilting lists variations called: 'Rocky Road to Jericho', 'Baby Bunting' and 'Cleopatra's Puzzle.' She says she prefers the Victorian era name, 'The Wanderer'.

I remember seeing it as 'Snake in the Hollow' with the fan squares connecting but meandering, but I don't know where.

Search for "Baby Bunting" for the most usual contemporary use, I think.

Did some searching...picked up a virus... oh well that's another story.

Found these cool templates for making the Snake in the Hollow quilt. Looks like the one you pictured had the heads and tails added.

The more I look at this the cooler I think it is. i may have to make one for my DD. She's had 2 pet snakes but now she is married and DH says NO! So she has a fire bellied toad

All my life I've had nightmares of snakes being in the bed with me.... no way Icould sleep under this; even though the colors are beautiful.

Oh my goodness! I don't think I would be doing that quilt. Snakes give me the heebie-jeebies!

What an interesting quilt.
I think it would take a very imaginative mind to come up with this design. I bet there are kids that would love this one.
