I've been told not to do this as when the birds nest gets wet, in a rain, the threads hold the moisture. twigs etc let the water drain out so the babies do not get wet and cold. Not 100% sure this is true, but the person who told me about this is an avid bird person.

When we find old birds' nests on the ground they are usually neatly lined with our dogs' fur that we've left outside after brushing the dogs. It seems nice to me that the eggs and baby birds have a nice soft start in life. Maybe it feels like cashmere to them!

No haven't tried it- however I'm afraid the trail they would leave would lead back to the house

Several people I know do this and also save the little shreds from fine trimming and do the same with them. One person in my guild makes pictured out of snippets on a background sprayed with adhesive then goes over the top with a fine mesh and adds more pattern in the quilting.

I've seen baby birds get their feet caught in the threads as it can wrap very tightly around them. They then have trouble walking as they leave the nest.

This is such a cool idea. I'm so glad you shared it. I'm going to start collecting my tread today. And now that I think of it, I could throw in the thin strips of fabric I cut off the quilts when I'm squaring them.
