It took me about a month and a half to finish this quilt. It's my first hand quilting project, and I definitely improved as I went. No pattern, just surrounded the pre-printed panel with squares. It measures 36" X 36".

Color is truest in the last two pics.

All of the fabrics except the purple paisley and the binding purple were scraps left over from other projects. Even the backing was from my stash.

I was amazed at the improvement in stitching. I thought on the first day that smaller stitches were just not physically possible. But changing to a smaller size needle helped A LOT.

Thanks! I used my computer as a light box and traced the elephant off of a free clip art site, then used fabric crayons to add color.

Pretty quilt. The only thing I hand quilted was preprinted panels. That was about 20 years ago. Now have arthitis in my hands and couldn't if I wanted to.

This is such a neat quilt! I am amazed at your improvement in stitches per inch (almost doubled your original!). I guess it goes to show that lots of practice will make a difference. Also, I love how you put the elephant on the fabric. Thank you for passing along that info.... I now really want to try this technique!

Thank you, everyone. It was (deliberately!) a pretty simple project, but it definitely got me hooked. Now I am already planning my next hand quilted project. I love that I can do it after the kids are in bed and it won't keep them up like my sewing machine.

Do you use a frame or hoop to quilt?

I mostly used a hoop, although I did try quilting without a hoop. That did not work well for me. I like that I can turn the hoop and quilt in any direction. I have tried quilting a little on a frame and it was much harder for me.

I tried a few different hoops, too, and found the best is a lap hoop that sets the work up about 6 inches from my lap. Just a plain hoop with no base came in 2nd, and a lap hoop that was about 8 inches high gave me a crick in my shoulder.
