I used 10-inch, 5-inch, and 2-1/2-inch blocks (because I used the packs)

I have also seen it done with 9-inch, 6-inch, and 3-inch squares...

I am doing this for my DD and just bought all different materials. I think I got FQ's, 1/2 yard, and 1/4 yard cuts. I cut out my own blocks. I also just eyeballed the placement.

Some child is going to be delighted with the quilt for kids. And the scruffy one is beautiful. So cheerful. And it looks like a good scrap buster, too. :D
