First blocks for the Memories of Japan quilt - are they ok??

Hi everyone. I'm a beginner to quilting and I've just completed two blocks for the 'Memories of Japan' oriental quilt but I'm not sure if they look ok? I've posted pics of some of the fabrics I will use, some of which have large prints. The big prints have to be fussy cut but I think the finished blocks don't quite look right, maybe it's just me because of the prints. Here's a pic of the pattern quilt so you know what the finished one looks like. The sashing I will use is the gold fabric in the pic at the end.

My blocks with two of the fabrics:

A pic of some of the fabrics I'll use

Black border fabric and gold sashing:

All advice greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you everyone for your lovely comments. I was a bit hesitant to cut anymore blocks until I was sure the ones I had done were ok. I'll carry on and do some more and see how things go. Thank you again. x

Very nice. Thanks for showing the individual blocks. It's nice to see how a block is actually constucted.

Can't wait to see it finished.

Stunning! You picked the perfect pattern..where did you find it? I have some Hawaiian fabrics that would look great in that pattern

I love this pattern. Asian fabrics are my favorite. They are very hard to find in our area but I do have a nice collection, as it seems you do too. You are doing a great job. What is the name of this pattern and its designer? I would love to showcase some of my fabrics in this way. Yours will be gorgeous

    Thank you. x
The pattern is called 'Memories from Japan' and its by Suzanne Lyle. Her email address is [email protected]. It just suited the larger print fabrics and that was something I was struggling with as all of the other patterns I liked were for smaller prints. The fabrics were bought in the US when my best friend lived over there so they had been languishing in her loft since returning to the UK some time ago now. Ive since bought a few other oriental fabrics to hopefully do a similar thing for the back so its reversible. Not sure how that will work out when I come to machine quilt the layers together unless I use invisible thread??! Will seek everyone's advice on here before I get to making up something for the back. Hoping that I can do her fabrics justice and give her a lovely quilt as she's had a really tough time with everything recently. Really appreciate your kind words and encouragement. Thank you again.

Lovely... however if you are wanting Japanese fabrics in it, I think I should let you know your red fabric, and the black one like it, are Chinese, not Japanese. Maybe you could just call it, "Memories of the Orient".... It will be beautiful.

Hi sewbizgirl. Thank you. I thought that about the red and black too. Yes, it's more of an oriental quilt as the other fabrics I have (not put pics of those on yet) are Japanese (more geisha and japanese patterns). My friend just bought the fabrics you have seen together as I think the colours were the main attraction. Will see how it goes!
