It is not easy. It is hard and sometimes I get discouraged. I did use rulers for this and I have to tell you that I love using them and would recommend trying them. Just makes it a little smoother.

I got the beginner set from quilter's rule. I didn't really know what to get and it looked like it had so much variety. I used a couple of the rulers with this.

looks like your coming along quite nicely. You're definitely getting the hang of the rulers! I'm also self taught. Like you, I watch videos & read as many books as I can get my hands on. I now can look at different designs & break them down into manageable sections. It gets easier with time & practice.
