Thanks to all of you for the encouraging comments. I wouldn't use fusible on these because according to the Hawaiian quilting tradition, it should be all hand done. I sometimes use fusible if I am going to machine applique, but I usually don't like the final look. I talked to my friend at the sewing gallery where I got my machines, and she suggested doing a blanket type stitch with the thread traveling between the layers & just a little stitch in the two fabrics. I will try that, but for some reason I have trouble doing that. I have arthritis in my right wrist and it doesn't bend much at all so it makes things a little more difficult; but not impossible.

What I want to know is how visible the stitching on the applique should be. I can see it and that bothers me. Please tell me what you think. The design is called Lokelani or beautiful rose.

I confess I have not read the other posts, but I just finished reading The Aloha Quilt and the character in it from Hawaii said the stitches should be almost invisible. Her method was to do it needle turned. She basted 1/4 inch from the outside and when turning under the edges, when the edge hit the stitching she knew she had the right amount turned under. Hope this helps. I have not made one. My cousin did, but she zigzagged it down with her machine.

I just finished a Hawaiian quilt class offered through Quilt University teach er was Nancy Chong, great teacher. Go on the web site of QU and look at all the classes they offer. You just might enjoy it. I learned alot from her and now I am taking a Baltimore Basics under her.
