Quilting in the hoop is using a simple design, some are even labeled as quilting designs, programmed into the embroidery machine and stitched out with the quilt sandwich hooped. I have the Bernina 830 which takes a jumbo hoop that works well with the quilt sandwich. I had trouble keeping the weight off the hoop, so I got some "shadowing" on some of the patterns as shown in the "rip or not rip" post. I got better at it with repetition, but on such a large quilt, there was a lot of hooping and centering designs. Then there's all the threads to trim off the back once you're finished. I love the look, but probably won't do it again on such a large quilt.
