Oh, and is there a specific brand of pen that you know to be reliable? If possible, I'd like to not have to wash this to get the pen out...

I just finished a runner tonight, using the straight stitch, then a decorative stitch above it, gave it to my friend awhile ago, she just loved the look !

I agree. Think crosshatching would really look great on that fabric.
