That is a great idea! I did that on my ironing board have one of those Big Boards (which are great) got a scorched spot so covered it with a red heart! Works!!

Yes, they are applique, machined stitch with the blanket stitch. I adderd them after the plain block got a scorch mark!! That is why they aren"t centered.LOL

I also wanted to mentioned, that if you are making a lap quilt and the person is in a Wheelchair you don't want to go any bigger as they have a tendency to get caught in the wheels but yet you want them to be big enough to cover their legs and kinda tuck in! I am a retired RN that used to work with Handicap people in wheel chairs.

I am sorry to hear about your niece. She will love the quilt. I agree with Patti Sue. If you Google 'Quilt Sizes', you will find that the approx. size for a wheelchair lap quilt is 37 x 48.
