Default Super Hero Quilt for Great-grand Nephew

Hi! I just finished a quilt for my sister’s 9 year old great grandson. He is a super hero fan so I bought a layer cake from the Superman vs Batman movie. I am happy with the way it turned out, but of course, things didn’t go the way I envisioned them. LOL. I had in mind to do ‘wonky stars’ in the sashing for that ‘kaboom’ look. This was more complicated than I thought but I did finally work out a system. Instead of wonky stars, the end look is more like messy xes. But it plays into the xes in the Wonder Woman squares, so I’m going with the flow. I used straight line quilting and the quilt finished at about 46x48. Thanks for looking.

Really nice! Interesting pattern would you mind sharing the name of it?

Great looking quilt and love the straight line quilting; how did you get so straight?

Thank you! I’m sorry, it’s not really a pattern. I took a class from Joann Fabric last year called Color Block Quilt, and I just modified the idea for this quilt. Here is the quilt from that class.....

On the super hero quilt I cut 2.5” strips off my layer cake 10” squares then swapped the 2.5” strips from one 10” square and the 5” from another for contrast. That created the two outside columns. Then I used 2.5” red strips for sashing on the 10” squares that made the middle column. I used black grunge dots fabric for the background. On the other side I watched a wonky stars video with Jenny Doan and modified it for sashing. Then just added sashing to the layer cake 10” squares. I can give more detail if you would like.

Thank you for the explanation, I really like the way you did the sashing on the back (I think - pic #2)

I used my walking foot to quilt it. I lined up the left edge of walking foot with the last seam sewn and periodically used a ruler to check to make sure I wasn’t too far off. If you look closely you can see variation....it’s not a perfect system. I started in the middle and worked my way out.

What a fantastic quilt that your Great-grand Nephew will really enjoy having. That was so thoughtful of you to make something that he loves.
