I choose # 1, and would add some black sashings randomly, to make colors pop.

Update: I finally finished the quilt. I used a few leftover squares to make a pillow. FMQ on my Janome with Sulky Polylite thread, which worked wonderfully (a variegated orange/yellow/blue). The thread is reasonably priced (I bought it online at Clotilde) and, as advertised, required no tension adjustments.
