The directions call for sewing right on the line. If you sewed past the line, you would have to trim all of your blocks, and there wouldn't be as much color showing either. I pin everything.  It's the only way I can get the points to match up , and I am sure ther are probably some that don't , but you would have to look pretty close!

Ninnie - Love your quilt. I just bought some prewashed muslin - do you think it will be OK to use prewashed muslin?

Remember years ago at craft stores you could buy prepackaged squares (4, 5 or 6 inch) with directions on how to sew them all together in rows to make a quilt. Well, guess what I found at a garage sale? There's probably 250 floral 5" squares, all different fabrics. I thought I could cut them criss-cross into 2 1/2 inch squares to make the Hatchet. I just love all your fabrics.

Thanks, glad you like it!
I used washed muslin in this quilt.
I love the old fashioned look to using it, so I say go for it!!
And I will be watching for pictures! :D :D :D
the more fabrics you use, the prettier it turns out!

So, if I cut these into 2 1/2 inch squares then I need to cut the muslin into 4 1/2 inch squares. I think that's right.

And if I used 3 inch squares I would need to cut the muslin into 5 inch squares? Just wondering because I just found a bunch of 6 inch squares in the bottom of a drawer that I haven't seen in a very long time. Can't even remember why I have them. I think they're leftovers from projects that I squared up for later. And now is later (LOL). They're all very light so maybe I'll use a leafy green for the big squares in this one. I have a pretty mottled green with a small, scrolly leaf pattern.
