Default memorial quilt for my niece

My brother passed away in March of this year. I went to Texas for the memorial service. My brother had one daughter. She was going thru his things and gave me a sack full of his neckties. I had to think about what I wanted to do with them. This quilt is what I made. It will be in Texas for Christmas as one last gift from my brother to his only child.

The two blocks on the bottom, I embroidered his name on one and his birth date and death date on the other. I had 28 fan blocks and needed 30 blocks to complete the setting. I hope she will like it.

It's a thoughtful, personal and elegant gift; I can't imagine anyone not liking it.

Awesome! How many blades did you get from one tie? It seems that all of the red ones are from the same tie. I have a large collection of ties from my dad and one of my uncles that have been waiting for me to do something with them.

I had 12 ties to work with. I washed them and then took them apart and ironed them flat. I fused a fusable interfacing to the back and used a Stack N Whack wedge ruler to cut the blades 7 inches long. I put 6 pieces in each fan. I got anywhere from 13 to 17 pieces per tie, depending on how wide the tie was. The red tie is the one he wore on Christmas and Valentines. I had to go in there. ;-)
