Default Memory Quilt

This quilt is a result of my collaboration with my niece as a tribute to her son who died at age 29. My niece picked the photos and where they would be placed. I made the 4 patch quilt and had it quilted by a long-arm quilter and then I added the binding. The photos including the borders were printed at Spoonflower. I found the backing at Spoonflower, which is a black background with vintage red Impala cars (his favorite car). I sewed the photo blocks on my DM with a line of stitching at the border and then a machine blanket stitch around the edges of each photo. I tried to find a local long arm quilter who would sew the photos on the quilt but could not find anyone who was willing to do this for me. This quilt is very heavy! I added 4 rod pockets as my niece wants to hang this quilt. I left approximately 4 inches between pockets for extra bracing. I'm very happy with it and my niece loves it, which is what I strived for. It has taken me over a year to accomplish and I still have the label and some personal sayings from my niece to hand sew on the back. This quilt is a great accomplishment for me at age 83.

That is just amazing! Did you make four patches and then put the pictures on top?
A quilt to treasure for sure!

Yes, the 4-patch blocks are 7.5" each.

This is the most creative photo layout I have yet seen in over 40 years of quilting. Thank you so much for sharing it with us. You have turned what could have been sad memories to such joyful memories.

That's an accomplishment at any age! May it comfort those who knew and loved him.
