Mendhi designs are usually seen as henna tattoos on Indian brides hands and feet. They can be quite elaborate. In that mode, Urban Threads has a Mendhi heart design. I downloaded digital file to my Janome machine. It only calls for three threads, but the way the colors transition works really well. I have stitched out several colors. I picked out the version the brown and beiges version, as it reminded me of the colors of henna. I used two layers of batting to make the heart pop. There is a 1/4 inch dark brown flange, a 1 1/2 inch Asian fabric with gold characters. The last border is batik in brown and cream with seashells as the design. I outlined the heart and followed with some echo stitching and stippling. I then changed to a walking foot and did stitch in the ditch in flange and various stitches in borders. I had just enough batik to do the binding. It measures 25 inches square. I thought it came out exotic with Indian, Chinese and Polynesian fabrics and embroidery.

Gorgeous. I have just gotten interested in Zentangle quilting. I wonder if I could pull this off, even in a modified version. I'll at least draw it for sure!
