This is another of my 2008 Xmas gifts that was finished for Xmas 2009 :)

My boyfriend's favorite video game growing up was Metroid. It got him into wanting to be a computer programmer, he runs a Metroid chatboard, etc etc.

So I took the original Nintendo (NES) cover art (I'm including a picture to show what I was making it match), got graph paper, and designed my quilt. Since it's NES, everything is pixelated, so it was all squares and rectangles.

The squares are 1", and the finished quilt was 5.5 ft x 6.5 ft, I think. Very big. And he was so excited when he opened it Xmas morning. He even picked out the fabric, but didn't know it, and there were various clues to its existence that he never picked up on, so I kept it a secret for 16 months which I'm really proud of

And here's the originals for what I modeled it after. One is the game cover, and the wording is on the title screen.

Lucy, that is a great quilt--I bet he loves it. You put a lot of work into it. Your quilting is beautiful--I'm so jealous. Can't FMQ for the life of me--been trying for months.
Really neat-thanks for sharing your pictures.

Holy Cow - that is quite the quilt!
I can see why it immediately hit the LOVE IT button.
Planning it all out in sewing order must have been quite a challenge.

Metroid is my second favorite game. Zelda was my top favorite but I spent hours and hours playing Metroid by myself on my game boy or on the nintendo deck with my grandkids. It is a great game. I love the quilt with the Metroid cover look!! What a creative way to make him a quilt!! It is definately one of a kind!
Now you ought to make a pillow to look like the controllers! LOL LOL

Yes. The hardest part was drawing the sketch since I first had to figure out which colors went where and I then had to figure out how in the heck to sew them together so that everything fits. The actual cutting and sewing was pretty easy, comparatively. I had to lay it out after every piece was sewn and ironed to keep of track of what went where. It was a good brain exercise.

I'm thinking of doing more of these types of quilts from the original NES games. Fun to watch them come together
