    That is because it is a photograph printed on to the fabric. The technique used is to print a photo onto the fabric then thread paint over it. Basically no applique is involved it is all thread painting. I attended a seminar at MQX by Jennifer Day who does this technique. I saw that quilt at Syracuse.
