This sounds like one of the memory quilts I've heard of being made when a woman was going "out West" by wagon train and she and friends all knew it was possible they would never meet again. So they made signature blocks to be made into a memory quilt and added the date so it would always be rememberd.
Sadly, very few of these women ever did see their families and friends again after "going out West". Lots of them did keep in touch with each other by mail, which in itself was not that reliable.

well...this is the "King" side of the family which is actually my grandad....but my grandmother made it. My grandad's mother died way before 34...I really don't know who to ask, as my grandad (who had 9 brothers and sisters)...they are all gone too. Even cousins seem to be gone. My mothers cousins are dead, and if I have any distant cousins that are my age I don't know them.

That's a great quilt, I wouldn't write the dates on it, it takes away from the originality.
With your story behind it, may be the Historical Society would be interested in your quilt, at least for an exhibition.
May be you could start out with your local newspaper. I think it's so interresting to know and see it.

signature blocks...1930's variation.
and the date is probably the date that each person signed their block...that's why it's not birthdates...all of my collected signature blocks have the date they were signed.

I sure wish I knew for sure the story behind the quilt. the only cousin of my mothers that is alive lives in Arkansas...I'm going to try to get in touch with her. I may give her the quilt, as she is a King (her mother was grandad's sister).
I still want to know what block this is, as I want to make a family quilt for my MIL and I like this one.
