This is the Chop and Sew pattern I found here on this board. I couldn't resist it. I had some fat quarters I purchased from Missouri Star Quilt and didn't know what to do with, so I decided to chop and sew them up. The border is a medium green that almost matches some of the greens in the quilt. What should or could I use for the backing? This quilt is 50 by 60. I don't know how I wound up with that size.

I would do a scrappy backing too. If your husband really thinks it is too wild you could do some decorative stiching on the solid blocks if your machine has some fancy stitches. It would tone it down but still be beautiful.

You could have a "calmer" backing if you wanted to.

I am not into decorative stitching. My machine would, but I couldn't. What is a "calmer" backing?

"calmer" backing - opposite of the wild top - :)

more specifically, one fabric only, something with a small all-over print, less intense colors

That is definitely a bright quilt. It looks like you had a lot of fun. :-D I would say go with your hubby's favorite color on the back and when he uses it he can use it with the back facing up and when you use it, you can use it with the front facing up; sort of a compromise between you two. Would that work?

Let us know what you decide and how he reacts. I'm completely curious!

I love this "bold" quilt!! It reminds me of a kalidescope! Where will the quilt go? If you put a "neutral" backing on it to tone it down for your husband's perception - would it then spend most of its time showing the back?

My opinion - since you asked :D I would use one of the materials in the front if I had enough or take the quilt top to the fabric store and see what "hit me". But it just might be bold! Like a bright/colorful paisley or something that looks tie-dyed! That would be wicked!

Just tell your husband you're expressing your wild side

I have no idea what I will do with it. I love bright, vivid colors. I could never put a docile backing on this. I just ordered some bright, weird looking, fat quarters from fabric.com. They might just do the trick. This might be for my grandson, he needs to liven up a bit. Just a thought.

    I love it.

To satisfy husband, do a scrappy back with colors that he likes. This may be too much work for you.

You could do as others suggested by making a solid back in his favorite color.

Or, as a last resort, tell him it's yours not his. At least you know that he won't use it.

I read your further posts.....it's for someone else. We don't all have the same tastes......luckily.

    Good luck!
