Below is a quilt I'm wrapping up (all hand-pieced/sewn so far) with the very fun Mary Cicely Barker illustrations converted to fabric by Michael Miller.

I'm wondering about the border for the outside. Any suggestions? I'm seeking about 4" all the way around (not including binding).

could do the green that is in the bottom of the boxes.....

I think the red would be too harsh....

I would use the dark green around it to "stop" the quilt. I would use it for the binding also.

how about the red which appears in many of the windows? great design.

I would choose the darker green. It will visually recede, allowing the intricate central pattern to really pop.

ETA: I love the design! I know a 5-year-old who would die of happiness if she saw this. :) She loves fairies and flowers.

If you use the blue which is the top plane of your windows then it will appear as if your quilt was a window in a wall because you have continued the "plane" on beyond the quilt center. This will give a completely different 3D image than in you just add a color that coordinates with your other colors. Your choice should depend upon what effect you want the total quilt to achieve. You have a marvelous 3D effect now. Do you want it to continue?

Oooh, TanyaL, *great* points about how, if I want, to continue to strengthen then 3D effect. I do have enough of that blue; I'll take a look. Not sure I want so much blue, though, but you've given me something to think about re: retaining the 3D effect.

If you don't want to use the blue, think of the blue at the frame around the windows. You now need to add the walls of the room, so I would choose something pale to compliment the colours already used, but paler. (OK, I am not a fan of bold colours on a wall). Perhaps a pale yellow or peach.
