Very nice! Practice does make improvement. Don't try for perfect-it is too hard to achieve in quilting and no one who matters will look for the imperfections. Just make things that bring you enjoyment and will be welcomed by those you love. Your first project is just that! Congratulations on becoming a grandfather! You will be a wonderful one!
