Definitely black for the sashing and border. I also would do outline quilting on the edge of each pieced area in black, so it defines the piecing...mainly because the quilter used the background fabric in some of the piecing and it fades out. By doing some outline quilting in black it will define each area clearly. It will be striking in black. I probably would scallop the black borders, too, for a little interest and to soften the quilt.

Wow, these are great blocks, I am going to print a picture and put it on my idea board, want to play with different fabrics- I can see it in Asians or CW repros, I would audition different fabrics to see which one works the best. I can see these blocks with black or natural muslin, or as someone suggested, yellow - how about yellow or muslin with black cornerstones, or black with yellow cornerstones- or maybe uneven stars as cornerstones, to add extra 'pow!' ? It will be stunning, no matter what you do with it - thank you for showing us these great blocks, such an easy design with such a spectacular result! Don't forget to show us how it turns out, thanks for sharing.
