Use both of them, cut the blue into a skinny inner border, surrounded by the plaid.

the plaid it brings in 2 of your colors blue and red
gives it more movement

I like the blue. It makes the plaid centre really pop, and I think it would work best with the red border you plan. Nice work, just in time for the fourth of July!
