I like the first picture, with the horizonal stripes. I think it adds more visual interest.

May I suggest that you do a narrow border (finished 1") of the beige and then a horizonal border of the stripe.

I like the strips, but I also like the idea of a color then a thin border of the strip. If it was mine, I would of did a wider brown border then a binding or a little wider stripe.
