i have this same cabinet, the top of mine was too messed up, i just made a copy of it on new wood but i put the hinges on the back and a shelf where the machine was and now it a desk!!

My DH is a wood guy, and he has taught me a couple of tricks to refurbishing...for the top, you can peel off the broken veneer and get new at Home Depot or one of the other wood places. Then you cut it and glue it on, and then stain it to match.
