It looks nice henry, what's the problem? Well, i can actually maybe see a problem, but i dont know, depends on what you're trying to do...i can see that you're trying to alternate two types of 9 patch blocks

Yes, i was trying to decide how to do borders both inner and outer before i get too far along with it. Would black overwhelm it or be the best to keep the colors popping?

Not sure what you are trying to do, but I'm thinking what is throwing you off is the fabric with the lines in it. It just doesn't "look" right.
    But, that's just me.

how do you mean about the borders? What i see is you alternating your nine patches in each row, but usually when this is done, the beginning of each row is usually done alternate too, but you have every row the same. Is that the look you are going for? Or more of a criss cross pattern, if you want criss cross, you have a nd b blocks.
    Row 1 ababababa
    row 2 babababab
    row 3 ababababa
but what you are doing is this
    abababa
    abababa

Is this intentional? if so it looks great either way, i love the colours!

Not sure what look you are hoping for, but that lined fabric is making it look wonky....I'd remove that block and put a different one there.

    Just my thoughts....

I think that if you are going to continue the theme with the black in the middle it will look great even with the stripes because they have purple that pulls it together. It all depends on what you are planning to do with it as a whole. I'd worry about the borders later. Just a thought. 8)

You know, i experience a lot of darkness sometimes, but i have to tell you, i have never seen darkness looking as beautiful as you have made it seem there. The colours are so pretty, and ive never seen darkness looking so happy. That is very beautiful Henry, and a beautiful title for your quilt.

I agree the stripes just don't go with the rest of the quilt. I'd take out the stripes and put a black border then a scrappy border. I think that the stripe block just draws your eyes there and takes away from the rest of the quilt

Well I am leaving it in there because it was part of the original design and something tells me it is just meant to be in there. But it will not be joined by any others.

(this sounds crazy but i had a dream last night where i was told to leave it in)
