This is probably what I will do with mine.
The pillow idea is also a good one. But get this: the piece of fabric used to make the narrow "loops" in this approx 4" pincushion is 10 or 10.5 inches square (I forget which). For a 12" pillow that would be a very large piece of fabric. Seems like it would be worthwhile to figure out a fabric shortcut.

they are so beautiful. I have been thinking of making some but I don't know if i want to do something so intricate.
Beautiful fabric choices and the buttons really make them.
