Here are some pics of a quilt I finished up today that I made for myself. The pattern is called "Legacy Stars". The fabric is from the "Legacy" collection by moda and I used 2 layer cakes for the inner top and then selected coordinating fabrics from the collection for the border, backing, and binding. I did free-motion quilting on it, and it measures 64" x 82".

I already commented on this on FB, but I don't mind saying it again, I LOVE this one :)

billswife99 10-02-2009 03:35 PM

This is beautiful!! Now my question is, how do you keep it all organised for sewing it into rows? I can see it's a variation of the Indian Hatchet like Ninnie made. But yours is organized where hers is random.

Eddie 10-02-2009 03:46 PM

Thanks, everyone! :)

Jenell, you're correct, this one was difficult to organize. The reason is that the star points extend onto the following row, and that row has star points from the row below it that extend upwards. So I had to make this one row at at time, laying out the pieces for the next row as I was doing it, and thinking about the row to follow as to where the dark star bodies would be. So it was like having to work on 3 rows at a time mentally, but sewing one row at at time. Then, of course, I had to keep all the pieces in order while piecing the rows and making sure that those with directional fabric (the stripes) were all oriented the same slanting way. It kept me on my toes!

Gorgeous, Eddie! I just love the look of the stars. Very simple but so pretty.

I bought the pattern from FatQuarterWorld.com as a kit. It came with the two layer cakes of the "Legacy" fabric.

redquilter 10-02-2009 05:21 PM

Eddie, you never cease to amaze me with your exceptional sewing/quilting skills and your eye for color. Wonderful quilt.

Mousie 10-02-2009 05:26 PM

your just cranking them out...one would think you had 'help'
It's very nice, and your quilting looks great. Do you have a longarm or do it on machine?

littlehud 10-02-2009 05:58 PM

That is a beautiful quilt. I love the pattern and the fabrics are yummy. Great job on the quilting too.

wesing 10-02-2009 06:04 PM

Eddie -

The quilt looks awesome! I love stars and this one is so clean, with the repeating rows and alternating colors. The fabric is awesome too. Great job!

Beautiful work, Eddie. Love the color combination and the quilting is great. Your explanation of working on one row while thinking three rows ahead has my head spinning--I'm not good at spatial relations. (Is it a blonde thing?) Really love it-thanks for posting the pictures.

Eddie this is beautiful and your FMQ ROCKS! :D

Debbie1 10-03-2009 07:46 AM

Another great one, Eddie. Love the Moda.

Iluv2quilt 10-03-2009 04:57 PM

Eddie, you did an amazing job on this! I really like it. Is this the first one you made for yourself? It's so special when we finally treat ourselves isn't it?

Ducky 10-03-2009 07:17 PM

Eddie, it's just beautiful! I have loved all the quilts you've made, though, I particularly love the colors in this. Your fmq is just about perfect.

SaraSewing 10-03-2009 07:50 PM

Nice quilt. I love this pattern. In fact, I have the fabric gathered for mine too. I got the pattern from http://quiltville.com/smokeymtstars.shtml

Wow, Sara, thanks for that link. Their version of the quilt is beautiful with those plaid fabrics! Stunning! And those links down at the bottom of the page with all the ones made by others are just wonderful. This makes me want to get my plaid fabrics out now and do something with them! :)

Another awsome fabulous one from our Eddie. You make us proud to be on the same thread. The colors in this are really nice. Happy for you that you are keeping this one for yourself.

I stand in awe and am humbled by your talents. I can only hope to achieve some of what you do in a month.

Eddie, what I want to know is how in the world do you get all of these quilts done in such short time? You must cut, sew, quilt, 24/7. Surely you work at a JOB and have chores to do. Then there is raising a family, shopping, cooking, cleaning, and of course somewhere in there we are to eat and sleep. And how in the world can you afford to make so many quilts? Ok I am done.

Hi, WV, and thanks for the kind words! :) As to finding the time, this is pretty much my only hobby, although I do have some interests outside of quilting that I'm actively involved in (local historical societies, etc.) And I have a 40-hour-a-week job that gets in the way of my quilting, too, LOL. :D And all those chores my wife gives me to do and expecting me to do them. Somehow, it all gets done though.

As to affording it all, there's two things working in my favor there - this is really my only "vice" as it were, so I indulge myself. Too, when I first got into quilting back in May, I had been in another hobby (model trains) for over a decade and had accumulated quite a lot of stuff in that. All that went onto eBay and the $$$$ from that was used to buy a LOT of jelly rolls, fat quarters, layer cakes, etc. So I got a pretty big stockpile of fabric just waiting to be made into something.

wvdek 10-03-2009 08:41 PM

Eddie, Thanks for the info. I was being nosey and curious. Now I understand how you can afford it. My DH has alway's wanted to get into the train thing again after losing much of his to a fire we had in our basement many years ago. Do to the cost he has not.
Guess your organization skills are better than most. You must have it down to a science and me thinks you have some perfectionism traits in you, too. Unbelievable you have only been quilting since May.
Your points and rows are incredible. Thanks for sharing your talents with us. Your wife must be very proud.

WOW! You do some wonderful work, Eddie. I bet your wife is thrilled to death with your hobby. Your quilting looks great too. I don't think I'd tackle a quilt like that. Beautiful.

This again is a beautiful quilt. I love the quilters. You really put out the quilts. You must not sleep, eat, or cook. You are always sewing. I do look forward to seeing your work.

Chilly Mac 10-04-2009 05:01 AM

Awesome job. Love the quilting you've done. I'm trying to get up enough nerve to try something other than straight line quilting.

sewjoyce 10-04-2009 07:41 AM

Very nice!!! I love it! You always do such an awesome job and I always look forward to your next ones!
