Hi everyone,

I've so enjoyed seeing everyone's lovely sewing spaces, that I decided to take advantage of my newly-clean room and take some photos to share. We actually finished this room about a year ago, but it's been in such heavy use since then that I haven't had a chance to take any pictures of it.

Like nearly everyone, I wish it were bigger. Sigh. I also wish that I had some wall space -- as you'll see, it's all covered. There is a small quilt to the side of the wall bed, but it got left out of the photos.

It's not perfect, but it's the nicest thing I've ever had, so I really am enjoying it. Hope you like it, too!

Batting, yarn, books, tools, patterns (boxes of stash above)

My knitting and quilting books, tools and thread and other notions in small drawers, patterns in small/large file boxes, fabric above in plastic bins

My DH and I live in a relatively small house (well, the bedrooms are small, at least). We share one room as our joint office space and the third bedroom was used as a guest room. The difficulty was that we seldom had need of a guest room and I desperately needed space for my quilting and knitting supplies. I was also sick of sewing on the dining room table. I needed a room of my own! (h/t to Virginia Woolf!) Once we figured out what to do with the bed, the rest happened pretty quickly. What IKEA didn't have, my husband made -- including the new wall bed. I would love to be able to have my fabric just out on shelves the way that so many other quilters do, but I frequently work with the window open and the dust would be a killer. As is often the case, I no sooner got all the storage units in place when I realized I needed more room! Ack! I guess I'll have to wait for our next house...

I have a huge felt design wall in the dining room (just outside this room), but I needed someplace to hang all the pretty little minis I was collecting and to put up reminders of the projects I want to work on next. (I forgot to put those back up when I took the photo; they hang from the lowest bar.) It all goes away when the bed needs to come down.

A few more...

Close-up of the darling birthday quilt my talented cousin made for my "LV-th" (55th) birthday. The alphabet she had didn't have numbers, so she improvised! Cute and clever...

Just a sampling of the Red Rose Tea figurines I've collected. I've got some from every set going back about 25 years. I've also got many extras, if anyone would like to swap!

Amazingly, all this disappears when we need a guest room again. The sewing table folds up and stands in the right corner next to the bed, the table* behind it (which holds my figurines and my ironing "board"* and iron) drops down against the wall, leaving just the 4" header. The side of the cabinet in the corner has pegboard* to allow me to hang my various rulers and other tools. I bought the TV and VCR on eBay; I like to watch movies I've TiVo'd while I sew. I have a pair of nice wireless headphones that I use -- otherwise I have to put the volume up so high (to be heard over the machine) that my husband goes nuts. (*More clever work by my DH.)

Last one, I promise!

A better look at the TV cabinet. It's actually meant for use in a closet -- the little bins where I keep my FQs are actually shoe storage! My DH made a pull-out lazy susan for the TV so that it would be "aimed" at my chair and not the door! The bookcase to the right of the door has: his cookbooks + back issues of Cook's Illustrated and Cook's Country magazines; plastic salad mix containers filled with WIP; knitting patterns in file boxes; more cookbooks; and finally more plastic drawer units. The little thing leaning against the cabinet directly in front of you (under the window) is a wonderfully clever folding swift that my husband made for me for Christmas one year. I use it to hit the on/off switch on the power strip next to it, which lets me turn off light/sewing machine/iron all at once.

Ahh, but I've been doing this for a while, Lisa! :-) I buy books cheaply online; I used to belong to a Keepsake Quilting FQ club, so a lot came from there; and I buy fabric from wherever I can find it on sale. I also inherited a bunch of stuff (notions/fabric/etc) when my mom passed away.

And don't forget that it's quilting stuff AND knitting stuff (although now that I think of it, I do have a big bin of yarn under the table in our office!).

Give it time, you'll soon have a good collection, too!

Quiltin'Lady 01-03-2010 09:24 AM

Thanks so much for all your nice comments. :-) It was a long time in planning.

Once I realized that putting the bed up was the only way to get some working space, I started looking at wall beds to buy. The cheapest (and nastiest) ones were $1500, while the really nice ones went well into the thousands. Much, much more than my frugal husband would be willing to spend.

Then I found that you can buy the plans and the lifting mechanism to make your own for about $400. The wood cost about $350. It's all plywood, amazingly enough. He'd never done any woodworking before, so it was quite an adventure. Luckily, the people who sell the plans are very helpful and got him over any bumps in the process. The mattress ends up about the same height as a regular bed and it takes no effort whatsoever to put it up and down. Very slick!

As I said, he also designed and built the fold-down table under the window and fixed the legs on my sewing table to get it to a height that was comfortable for me.

He grumbles a bit every time I say, "You know what would be nice right here?" but he always comes through for me with class. Definitely a "keeper"!

cutebuns 01-03-2010 09:30 AM

Sounds like he is a keeper, I am usually the one that does most of the woodworking etc,

Esqmommy 01-03-2010 09:33 AM

Wow, great room.

Hey we're neighbors! I live in Pleasant Hill! Do you ever come thru the tunnel?

Hiya neighbor! Whenever I do, I'm always going at the "wrong" time, so I don't go there too often!

When I needed something special from Joann's, I used to go to the big one in Concord, but now that there's a new one right next to the El Cerrito BART station, I go there instead. (I BART to work at UC Berkeley, so it's a quick trip after work.)

AtHomeSewing 01-03-2010 10:28 AM

Wow, Great organization! Lot of goodies, looks like fun!!! :-D

MoMoSews 01-03-2010 11:19 AM

Cheryl 01-03-2010 12:01 PM

What a Studio please this is not a room ha ha I wish everyone would think of it that way because you are ALL Artists.
He did a wonderful job on it and I have to say You have alot of stuff and material. I like the place where you have your fat quarters . good idea but it really looks good.

wvdek 01-03-2010 12:31 PM

Wonderful use of space and organization. You maximized every inch and to your advantage.

Doesn't it make it much easier to have a wonderful time sewing/crafting/knitting in lyur space when you know where everything is and everyhting is in it's place?

Haven't you also found, because you know where everything is, you spend less money on stuff you don't need? What a difference you have made.

MollieSue 01-03-2010 12:51 PM

Wow!!!! What a wonderful room, and your organization is a Double Wow!!!! Very, very nice!!! :) :)

MaryL 01-03-2010 12:55 PM

Your room is great!

lots2do 01-03-2010 02:52 PM

Quiltin- lady,
I have to ask you about your white sewing table. I think I have the same one and I've had trouble with vibrations when I am sewing fast on it. Is that why you have that extra piece of wood under your machine? I'd really love to have your ideas/tips on how to use it effectively, if you don't mind.
Thanks for posting,
lots2do

No problem! (goodness, you have sharp eyes! )

We added the wood piece to raise the machine up because it wouldn't stay at the proper height to match the insert. Had to add a couple of thin metal washers on the side nearest me as shims to get the sewing arm completely flush, but it works.

I, too, had terrible problems with the machine moving around, particularly when I was sewing long strips (uh, probably faster than I should be...). So my DH drilled a hole in the shelf and the wood piece and added a long bolt that went through both to the hole on the bottom of the machine (for just that purpose).

Voila -- it's now steady as a rock.

Now THAT'S a sewing room!!!! Great Job!!!
