Well worth your effort as it's a wonderful quilt that you have the pleasure of knowing was lovingly worked on by both you and your grandmother.

jeanneb52 10-16-2011 02:45 AM

What an accomplishment. I
m sure the Grandma wouldn't mind the shift...she'd be proud of you.

olebat 10-16-2011 02:55 AM

This is timely. I'm about to start on one from my husband's great grand mother. Thanks for sharing - perhaps I won't have that problem, thanks to you.

Hahaha - glad to help

I am amazed at the vibrant colors in your GFG, especially in a quilt started years ago. You are so fortunate to have that quilt and did a wonderful job finishing it, even if you did have a blip in the process.

sarahrachel 10-16-2011 03:28 AM

It's beautiful and you will treasure it. I hope to finish my GFG in 3 1/2 years (by the time I graduate college) if not by then, well, then eventually! But your's will be a treasured heirloom because your grandma started it. Enjoy it!

mummadee 10-16-2011 03:32 AM

What a lovely story. It's truly an heirloom quilt and just beautiful. Grandma would be thrilled.

catladyquilts 10-16-2011 03:37 AM

it's beautiful- remember - there are no quilt police and if someone acts like it, they don't understand the process or the love that goes into a project.

sandrabrueggeman 10-16-2011 03:46 AM

Such a treasure, just beautiful.

so-sew 10-16-2011 03:47 AM

I think you did a beautiful thing....and the quilt is beautiful also.

Bonbonary 10-16-2011 04:02 AM

Looks wonderful & such great memories!

GMaJanet 10-16-2011 04:03 AM

good job..

quilt crazee 10-16-2011 04:38 AM

"the STORY" is part of the quilt & makes it so much more! MY GFG is still not a finished top (close) I started @ work when I was pregnant 36 years ago ! one of these days, I'll complete ITS STORY!

jhoward 10-16-2011 04:40 AM

Some of us learn the hard way; experience. The quilt is wonderful, no matter!

nabobw 10-16-2011 04:44 AM

wonderful job

Latrinka 10-16-2011 04:57 AM

mcdor 10-16-2011 06:38 AM

Absolutely lovely, great quilt, be proud..

lindy 10-16-2011 06:46 AM

Beautiful! I love those vintage fabrics.

quiltingfan 10-16-2011 07:08 AM

Wow are grandmothers must have been friends. I inherited one of those also, except mine was still in pieces and just had some of the flowers put together in an order that I could never finish that way. SO I took it apart and took the rest of the little pieces made the flowers and now and just appliqueing them to squares. I am taking 6 at a time making a small lap quilt and giving them to my mom and her sisters for Christmas. If I finish in time. Yours looks amazing. I truly love the total affect, it is hard work though... good job

Sunnye 10-16-2011 07:12 AM

Really nice job.

sunnymom 10-16-2011 07:22 AM

I love it! You did a GREAT job!

Joan 10-16-2011 07:28 AM

That is truly an heirloom and you deserve a big pat on the back (and a hug) for persevering and getting this done. It is beautiful. I love the fact she used your clothing fabric in the flowers and that you added your daughter's as well. I hope you record the story on the label.

(from a quilter who loves to quilt but isn't fond of spending time fixing mistakes......and I seem to make my share  )

MaggieMeg 10-16-2011 07:51 AM

It is a wonderful family treasure!

MargeD 10-16-2011 07:51 AM

Don't give the "quilt police" a second thought. You have in your possession a unique family heirloom that your grandmother made with love and which you finished with love. I'm sure she's just happy that the quilt is finished and that you finished it. If you don't say anything, no one will notice. Great job on a beautiful quilt. My third quilt, my second to machine quilt was pinned carefully, I began in the center, working my way out and talk about shift, puckering, you name it; but I learned a lot from that quilt, and it was an over-sized king quilt that I quilted on my Kenmore. Your quilt looks beautiful and grandma is looking down from on high beaming with pride.

red-warrior 10-16-2011 08:33 AM

Grandma would be proud and happy! :)

breezyquilts 10-16-2011 08:35 AM

Oh, a LABEL - now that is a good idea...someone needs to explain the wonky border - hahaha. Seriously, it is a good idea. I need to at least document the quilt's heritage. Thanks.

maryb119 10-16-2011 08:39 AM

It's beautiful! What a treasure you have! Don't forget to add a label to it.

vintagemotif 10-16-2011 08:41 AM

Beautiful quilt!

judykay 10-16-2011 09:15 AM

Beautiful and well done, I hope you enjoy it for many years to come.

I forgot to add that I am very jealous, my grandmother use to quilt for quilting bees so I am told but had never seen anything she had done.

rosiewell 10-16-2011 09:23 AM

beautiful, the colors are stunning, you had the patience to go back and fix it, it must have taken a while, good for you!

JCL in FL 10-16-2011 09:28 AM

It's all a learning experience. The quilt is wonderful. You were very brave to take the task on.
This site helps a lot of new quilters not make the mistakes the rest of us have made. It great that there is a person to ask those questions. I know I started quilting when there weren't many people around me that quilted and I didn't have the internet to look at tutorials and such.

IdahoSandy 10-16-2011 09:31 AM

When I was a kid, my mother and I cut out these hexagons(for my grandmother) from a cardboard template and lots of old worn out cloths and there was my old dress, my aunts blouse, uncle's shirt. They didn't know about things as straight of the grain back then, so any way we could fit the pattern on the material was ok with us. I remember seeing old quilts in museums and they were not perfect but all hand made from scratch. Beautiful scrappy quilt.
Thank you for those lovely memories.

I have not done this particular UNTHINKABLE, but I've done my share of "What the heck was I thinking?" things. It's a live & learn world!

Whenever a quilt design permits, I stitch in the ditch to where the layers are well secured & then I bind it before I do little fancy stuff within each block. I've never had problems doing it that way & find it easier to work with once the binding is on (and I need every advantage I can get).

BTW, love your GFG quilt.

brightstar_202 10-16-2011 10:02 AM

I think it's beautiful

The Internet is a godsend. 20 years ago, when I first got this quilt, I knew it should be hand quilted, since the top was all hand pieced. I remember searching in the library and book stores, looking for this "unknown pattern" to see the traditional way to quilt it. I finally opted for stitching about 1/4 inch from the seems. Lots of trial and error, but DONE :)
