I started these during a QAL from "Happy Quilting" ... I had intended on making my kidney donor a quilt and this was for her ... I made about 18 of the stars and then got really bored with the pattern/technique... the host taught us to make flying geese with no fabric waste or triangle piecing..it's a great technique I just lost interest... we were supposed to make 6 of each pattern so I only made 3 of the 8 patterns.. :-( ..I feel bad and want to start over for my donors quilt but my dilema is I am on a deadline... I want to give it to her for Christmas... I am making 7 more random stars today then will border the 25 blocks, lay them out and see how it looks.. what do you think? PS.. I work full time and have no time to start & finish a new quilt by Christmas....

Murphy 10-10-2011 09:30 AM

Don't think about the pattern or technique. Think about why you are doing it and who you are making it for. That should take away any boredom that is felt.

Tallulah 10-10-2011 09:32 AM

I like what you have so far. Make the few more and put it together. It will be pretty.

PaperPrincess 10-10-2011 09:32 AM

Alternate star blocks with plain background squares, or use wide sashing.
Great start!

irishrose 10-10-2011 09:33 AM

Those are beautiful stars. Your choice of fabrics is lovely. If you're worried about it being large enough can you add sashing? That would increase the size quickly without doing too many more blocks. 4 blocks by 5 blocks with sashing should make a decent size lap quilt or your 5 by 5. My last few lap quilts have been square.

yolanda 10-10-2011 09:33 AM

Thank you so much - I will take that piece of wisdom and go make some stars .... I forgot to mention the fabric is not to my taste color wish but it is to who the quilt is being made for!

I think the "Stars" look great. If you are tired of making them, lay them out and fill in with sashing or borders to achieve the finished quilt size you want. The recipient will never know that wasn't the original plan.

yolanda 10-10-2011 09:34 AM

oh sashing and 4x5 ... maybe i will only make two more...

Thanks everyone for the encouragement! I am going to go walk the dogs then get to sewing... I have today off and most of it is dedicated to finishing this quilt!

Willa 10-10-2011 09:37 AM

It looks fine as is but if you feel you want it bigger how about sashing.

Fabaddict 10-10-2011 09:38 AM

I think the stars are great and if making it larger is a problem, try making some alternate blocks - snowballs for example to alternate with the stars, half square triangels the same size or just plain fabric. You would be surprised at how quickly it will go.

wraez 10-10-2011 09:42 AM

Those are wonderful.

I love stars and know what you mean about the repetition of the same block, but I found that creating 'wonky stars' is fun and each one is a bit different and not boring. Something you might want to give a try sometime.

ur stars look great... lotso f good ideas above.. u can do this... ur almsot finished!!!

laceybritt 10-10-2011 10:03 AM

It's gorgeous, but I know how hard it is to get motivated to make something that doesn't appeal to you.

Also, you must not be in great health so that could be slowing you down.

The closer you get to the end the more enthusiasim you'll get.

Very thoughtful of you!

Maia B 10-10-2011 10:29 AM

I really like square quilts, so 5x5 is cool. Or you could use alternate setting blocks, like a larger center square with smaller squares in the corners of the block. That creates a secondary diagonal pattern in the quilt. Good luck! May you both be blessed with good health.

BETTY62 10-10-2011 10:34 AM

I think ( know ) it's going to be beautiful and that she will love it.

needles3thread 10-10-2011 10:55 AM

There is nothing wrong with these stars........keep going & finish it.

I think it is going to be a wonderful quilt! Change how you might finish it to make it more interesting to you. Good luck and we want to see a pic of the final!

blueangel 10-10-2011 12:03 PM

Beautiful

Dena789 10-10-2011 12:44 PM

I think your stars look wonderful! Depending on the size of quilt you want, you could also set your blocks on point with alternate plain squares. That seems to make a quilt larger quickly! Whatever you do, she will love it!

This was my thought, also.
Good luck, they are beautiful blocks and will make a gorgeous quilt.

:D :D

Your stars are so pretty. It will be a wonderful gift when you're finished. As already mentioned, if you want to enlarge the quilt you can always sash and include alternate plain blocks. Keep going. It's going to be much loved by the recipient, I'm sure.

redquilter 10-10-2011 04:04 PM

That is going to be a dynamite quilt. I love all the colors. I agree with everyone - don't put additional pressure on yourself. Use sashing or simple alternate blocks and you can knock that baby out in no time! (this from a person who can NEVER knock out a quilt!) As someone else said, think of who it's for and the sacrifice that person made and you'll find it a lot less boring. Wishing you both good health.

yonnikka 10-10-2011 04:08 PM

Put a wide frame around each star, say a 3 inch wide, which will make each block BIG. Find a sewing friend, let her help you assemble. You will generate energy and enthusiasm by working together. Trust me, it is a Law of the Universe.

yolanda 10-10-2011 04:56 PM

Thank you to everyone who posted and kept me going on this... 7 hours later (minus a lunch break)... I made two more blocks.. sashed them all with the same color backgroud and squared them all a little "on-tilt" ..sewed the blocks into rows and the rows into a top~! it is 4x5 laid out and I am going to add two borders.. .I will take a picture before bed and post tonight or tomorrow... thanks again as your encouragment did it for me :-) you are the best!!

Tweety2911 10-10-2011 05:50 PM

Love your scrappy stars. If you want to stretch it just alternate your blocks with plain printed fabric squares the same size of your blocks.

Highmtn 10-10-2011 06:01 PM

You will be SOOOO SURPRISED when you see how that jumps to life once it's quilted! I think it's great! Once it's finished you'll fall back in love with it again!

alikat110 10-10-2011 06:16 PM

Nice job

debbieumphress 10-10-2011 11:07 PM

Beautiful. Thanks for sharing it with us. YOu had some sharing advice. Take a break and begin again.

JoyjoyMarie 10-11-2011 03:13 AM

My daughter's motto- "DONE" is better than "PERFECT"- use sashing or alternating squares to stretch it out, and enjoy the creative process. It is an wonderful gesture to one who gave you so much. Prayers for a continuing successful recovery!

helou 10-11-2011 04:02 AM

Thank you for posting!

Here is the final layout without borders. Next weekend I will add borders. Thanks again to all that posted and helped to keep my on task yesterday.. 7.5 hours minus a lunch break and it's done!

Marcia D 10-11-2011 04:27 AM

Good job! I have a project that I have put aside. I need to get back to it so it can be gone. Thanks for the encouragement.

I agree. I think it is going to be lovely and happily received. Ha...recipient won't be bored at all <smile>.

I like your final layout, extra white strips makes the stars shine. If the flying geese you made are in the same fabrics maybe you can incorporate them in the border.

I did a quilt and used the sashing to make additional stars. Don't have to be exact, can just add squares to each corner of sashing and a cornerstone. Really quick.

helou 10-11-2011 07:41 AM

Lovely result! It is really beautiful.

Matilda 10-11-2011 07:48 AM

How pretty! You did a beautiful job Yolanda!

sharin'Sharon 10-11-2011 09:39 AM

I also like the 4x5 block setting in lieu of 5x5 cuz I prefer rectangular quilts. Your stars look good and GOOD LUCK in meeting your goal date.
