My first king size, Starstruck.
Fairly daunting as I am quilting it on my Janome 6600 and have just started the fmq, so a way to go yet.
This is the first time I've done a separately pieced border, and it came together very well.
I ditched between the blocks to stabilise first.
I will post again when its finished, meanwhile here a couple of WIP photos.

Oh my- I am loving your quilt. The colors and pattern are beautiful. And you're doing the quilting on your machine??? I'm impressed-what you have done so far is gorgeous. Those feathers look wonderful. Wow!

You do beautiful work on both the peicing and the quilting.

gaigai 08-07-2010 04:44 AM

Well, Kathy, I for one am Awestruck!! It's beautiful! And you're a much better woman than I am for quilting that monster yourself! LOL

It's not too bad - yet
I have it all to the side and in front of me well supported. And I am working it a quarter at time from the middle to the edge. Then turning to the next quarter.
It's not easy right in the middle keeping the folds on the right squished up against the machine, but I just take it slowly.
I think the trick with doing one this size is not to work on it for too long a stretch at a time. I do about an hour then either go and do something else for a while and come back to it, or even call it quits for that day.
I am purposely quilting each block separately, rather than "travelling" because then I am only navigating 12" at a time.

mollymct 08-07-2010 05:23 AM

That is beautiful!! Wow...

Absolutely gorgeous! I love the blue and white combination - very crisp and fresh. I bet it would be beautiful with other colour combos too - red/white/ black/white, brown, cream, etc.. Is this your own pattern or did you get it from a book?

It's from Judy Martin's "Star Happy Quilts", very slightly adapted by me in that the smallest star is my own addition - the pattern doesn't have that one.
The quilts in it are all from the same block which is the 12in star plus the 6in and a plain 6in square next to it - but in different sizes and layouts.

Oh I do hope so! I have wanted to do a big star quilt for quite some time, and I love blue and white together - think almost everyone does!

meme2cooper 08-07-2010 06:27 AM

Wow the quilt is beautiful but your fmq is great!! How do you do such nice fmq? I do ok with stippling but nothing like yours. It's very pretty!

Gorgeous!!! I just love blue and white quilts. Beautiful job on the quilting. I hope some day I can graduate from meandering to FMQ feathers. Very nice!

SharonAnne 08-07-2010 06:31 AM

What a beauty!! I just barely was able to quilt a baby quilt, so your talents wow me.

dglvr 08-07-2010 06:34 AM

You did an aweseme job on the quilt. Start to finish. Love the pattern and your fabric choices. You are very talented

These feathers are easy Cheri - from the book "Hooked on Feathers" by Sally Terry. It has changed my fmq immensely - here is a link to a post about it

Beautiful quilt & Beautiful quilting. I'm trying to learn the FMQ and so far can only do the meandering quilting style. How in the world can you do the feathers and other quilting patterns? I've tried to do feathers on a practice piece and it looked like loops gone crazy. Do you follow a paper quilting pattern or use a marker? I aspire to do what you are doing! I'm sure to get this good you have to do a lot of practice. Thanks for sharing!!

Maggie_Sue 08-07-2010 06:59 AM

Yes, inquiring minds want to know, do you mark your quilt? Which, by the way is just beautiful!!!

purmela 08-07-2010 07:02 AM

good job. Stars and in blue ! My favorite always.

Debbie and Maggie - no I dont mark at all, it's totally freehand.
See my post above about the feathering method, it's a great method, no backtracking and is very easy.
And yes I do practise what I'm going to do alot - but mostly on paper just to get the feel of it, then perhaps one practice sandwich before I start. And I always have a couple of minutes on a scrap at the start of a new session!

Debbie B 08-07-2010 07:12 AM

I saw the post above about Hooked on Feathers after I posted my reply to you. Thank you. I'm going to order the book today. And again...your quilting is beautiful!

if i could free motion like that i would give it a shot.. but after doing my king size, i was just too overwhelmed to even quilt in the ditch...

Overlander 08-07-2010 07:50 AM

I love star quilts - oh heck I love quilt period! Beautiful fabrics and exquisite quilt.

quilterguy27 08-07-2010 08:15 AM

Oh, I love, love, love this pattern. I have two or three different patterns very similar to this one and it's on my to do list. Just have to get to it. So many quilts, so little time. Your quilt takes my breath away. Thanks for sharing.

Oh Kim, I love your babies in your avatar. I used to have two dobies. They were stolen. A very long story, but I can only hope that the woman that stole them is taking very good care of them. You brought memories just flooding back. Thank you! What are their names? Mine were Zepplin and Zenobia.

RedGarnet222 08-07-2010 08:22 AM

This quilt is just so lovely. I am impressed with your fmq as well. You are smart to only attack a small amount at a time. My wrists get very sore struggling to keep it lined up.

Thanks everyone!

Red - I could not have done this I think without the Sewslip mat I got recently - it makes movement soooo much easier - worth every penny (or cent!) and more
