This quilt was made with FQ's...as such, I didn't wash them. Big mistake. I washed it and threw it in the dryer before bed last night. I used extra low heat, so come this morning, it hadn't dried completely. I think from sitting, damp, over night in the dryer, it ran, because it looked perfect when I pulled it out of the washer and checked it out. I pulled it out of the dryer and hung it up so I don't make it worse by setting it in. Please help...QUICK! This quilt is for my Grandmother. I just finished it last night and was planning to give it to her this afternoon when we (four generations including my children) get together for lunch and Granny is going through all of her fabric, yarns and crochet cottons to give to us (me and Mom).

*sigh* That's what I was afraid of. Thank you, I'll see if I can't track this stuff down. Maybe they'll have some at my LQS...?

thequiltmama 01-22-2011 04:49 AM

TRY THE "TIDE TO GO" AND RUB LIKE CRAZY WITH THE STICK. I don't know if it will work but it has worked on so many other things in my house. good luck :-)

dakotamaid 01-22-2011 04:56 AM

Throw it back in the washing machine with a color catcher, rewash and than dry. If you dried it on low heat it may not have set. But do that before anything else. Once you start with other things you are setting it harder. This advice comes from a fabric expert I know. (Not me, she is my go to person!)

Edit: The Bleedout might be the trick also but I would try just a color catcher first, just my thought. Good luck and let us know what worked.

sewcrafty 01-22-2011 05:00 AM

Do you have any of that Oxy Clean? If you have the spray pre-wash, spray well and wait. If in the tub, make a paste, apply & wait. If everything that everyone suggests doesn't work, dilute bleach with a little water and apply with a Q-Tip to the affected areas. This needs rinsing really well though.

It is still damp now, I didn't try to dry it again because I didn't want it to set - I have it hanging over the half wall upstairs so no more of the coloured parts touch the white...lol. I don't have colour catcher's though, and have never seen them in my area, I've looked everywhere for them... :( I think I might have seen someone on this board say that they (or a friend?) accidentally used a dry baby wipe thinking it was a Colour Catcher and it worked...?

leonajo 01-22-2011 05:08 AM

I was also going to suggest Bleach on a Qtip, BUT I would try the other advice first.......good luck!

obxqwlter 01-22-2011 05:08 AM

This is what I woudl do also...the color catchers are a terrific thing!

Hmm, I don't have any, but I might be able to get some...I *hope*? Yikes. I don't think Granny will be getting her quilt today... :(

obxqwlter 01-22-2011 05:10 AM

Look for color catchers in the detergent section of your supermarket...I have found then everywhere!

Yes...that's where I've been looking...I actually wonder if they're even available in Canada because I have *never* seen them.

dakotamaid 01-22-2011 05:33 AM

If you can't find them in your area pm me and I'll mail you some, they will not be expensive to mail!

Edit: these guys ship international.

raedar63 01-22-2011 05:34 AM

If it is just a couple of spots and all else fails I would put an applique over it.

twospoiledhuskies 01-22-2011 05:50 AM

I made a paste of oxgy, let it sit for a while.

I had two big rust stains from my iron on my light pink fabric.

It came out fantastic. Couldn't see a thing. Left a white
powder residue, but it just came of with a little water.

Your quilt is beautiful I know your grandma will love it

SueDor 01-22-2011 05:57 AM

There is a spray product called "Resolve" and "Resolve Max" to get stains out. They both work very well, but the "Max" is suppose to work better. Warning though, don't spray the "Max" on and leave it on over night without washing, it washes out all the other colors.

deema 01-22-2011 06:04 AM

Thanks for all of the ideas, everyone. I had to use what I have on hand, since the baby is sleeping I can't leave the house (and really want this to be fixed by noon so I can bring it to Granny for our lunch date), so I diluted some bleach and used q-tips. It seems to have done the trick - there wasn't a whole lot of it all over, just 5 or 6 spots, and the two I showed pics of were the worst. It's back in the wash now, with a couple of old white sheets - hopefully they will act like a Color Catcher (since I can't find them to save my life), and if there is any left over bleeding, they will get it instead. I'll give it a thorough check before putting it in the dryer again...

Millstream Mom 01-22-2011 06:15 AM

fingers crossed for you!

I know your Gramma will love your quilt! Its beautiful.

Sandi19 01-22-2011 06:19 AM

I would also use one of those spot sticks and rewash with a color catcher. I wash all my fabric and small quilts with a color catcher. I even give a color catcher when I give someone a quilt. It's just a good insurance against running dyes. I hope you get some good results. It's a very pretty quilt.

deema 01-22-2011 06:44 AM

IT ALL CAME OUT!!!!!!!!!!

I just took it out of the wash again, and examined every square inch with a flashlight before putting it in to dry. There isn't a SINGLE mark on it! I couldn't even tell where the marks were to begin with.

****happy dance****

Thank You for all of the tips, Ladies!! And thank you Clorox! lol

PaperPrincess 01-22-2011 06:53 AM

Great! I'm so glad. Your Grandmother would have loved it in any case.

Sharon M 01-22-2011 07:03 AM

Pretty quilt, Grandma will love it! Color catcher sheets have always worked for me. I keep them on hand for all my accidents

true4uca 01-22-2011 07:20 AM

I haven't been able to find them in Canada either. So on my first trip to the U.S.A. I bought some. I asked the ladies at the quilt guild where to get them & no one had even heard of them.

oatw13 01-22-2011 07:21 AM

You can also try dabbing hydrogen peroxide on the spots and let it sit for a few minutes. Spots will often start to disappear if you let it sit.

You can also make your own oxiclean. There are several recipes on the internet if you google "make your own oxiclean". Here is one:

Good luck.

I think if you just wash it again, it will come out.

karenm36 01-22-2011 07:32 AM

I just recently had that same problem with a shirt I have. Some other piece of clothing left color all over it. I just rewashed it and it came out! Try that first and see what happens. Best of luck to you!

Raggiemom 01-22-2011 07:39 AM

I'm so glad the marks came out. It's a beautiful quilt and I'm sure your grandmother will love it.

Candace 01-22-2011 08:39 AM

Phew....that was lucky. And a big lesson to prewash your fabrics in the future.

Scrapquilt 01-22-2011 09:18 AM

When my son washed his white bathroom rugs with red rugs from the other bathroom....his white rugs turned pink. He bought Rit Color Remover sheets, rewashed the pink rugs with the sheet and they were white again. This product really worked for him.

Connie in CO 01-22-2011 09:22 AM

I went back and looked at the pictures again. To me it looks like it's part of the fabric.

lllog 01-22-2011 09:25 AM

We recommend Retayen to hold colors.

I think i recently saw them at the walmart. really new there though in Canada. Some LQS's carry them but they are much more. good luck!

Prism99 01-22-2011 10:14 AM

Washing in Synthrapol would help. Might take several washings, though. Synthrapol is widely available in quilt shops and online (Amazon has it, for example). I always keep Synthrapol on hand.

ewecansew 01-22-2011 11:44 AM

I have been looking for color catchers, as well, but don't think they are available in Canada. Probably some ingredient in them that isn't approved in our Canada.

I saw it once and it was on clearance. Never thought of buying some.
Didn't need it at that time. Well now I can't find any. :(
At least I have Retayne and Synthrapol to come to the rescue. ;-)

AnnieH 01-22-2011 02:28 PM

Such a pretty quilt. Good luck.

Grandma Jane 01-22-2011 02:31 PM

Biz - rub liquid Biz into the areas that were bled on - wait a couple of hours and rewash.
