This was given to me by my mother...she said it was from 1842.
Has small stain...where can I get values on quilts in case I would sell this one?

PABerard 04-02-2011 05:24 AM

WOW is that beautiful

tutty 04-02-2011 05:25 AM

Gorgeous !

oldswimmer 04-02-2011 05:28 AM

OH, dont sell it. You may NEVER have the chance again to own such a beautiful quilt. Do you know if it was handed down through your family? That would make it even more precious. It is absolutly gorgeous, and looks to be in excellent condtion. The colors are still vibrant and the border looks wonderful. I dont think a small stain will devalue it at all. I hope you decide to keep it and display it....it is just wondeful!

Dee G 04-02-2011 05:32 AM

How beautiful! If you keep it you might make a label for the back with any history you find including how & when it was given to you.

bbquilter 04-02-2011 05:33 AM

Oh that is beautiful.

BeeNana 04-02-2011 05:34 AM

I would do a web search. Also you might contact or look up the University of Nebraska to find more information. I think they have a large collection and this might be a great resource. You could google quilt museums and see if one is in your area.
I am not sure selling would be my choice.

tealfalcon 04-02-2011 05:50 AM

oh wow wow wow...i could never sell it. but you prob should get it appraised for insurance purposes

quiltgran2 04-02-2011 05:58 AM

Oh my that is truly a wonderful quilt. I would give my eye teeth to own one of those. Lucky you.

pheasantduster 04-02-2011 06:05 AM

I have an antique crazy quilt and in 1966 there was a Massachusetts Documentation Project and this group advises on history and make-up of quilts. The quilt was documented by this group and through this site I was told that this Documentation Project was conducted all over the United States. You may try to google and see what information you get. Beautiful Quilt a treasure.

Beautiful heirloom! Keep it safe and enjoy it. Many quilt shows have a valuation service for a small fee. You should insure it.

fabric_fancy 04-02-2011 07:14 AM

contact your local quilt guild they might know of an appraiser in your area.

debcavan 04-02-2011 07:16 AM

There are appraisers. Ask you quilt shop or local group. Reedsburg Wisconsin has an appraiser at their local show and the big show in Madison Wisconsin also has one. So check when you see a quilt show advertised. They do appointments. It looks in great shape.

dinlauren 04-02-2011 07:30 AM

I would have it appraised also...it's gorgeous...maybe not to sell right away though.........enjoy the journey

nativetexan 04-02-2011 07:41 AM

look for a quilt museum near you. or try quilt stores and see if they know of someone who can evaluate quilts.

It is gorgeous. I am thinking that it might not be that old, maybe only about 1942 or so. Quilters back in the 1800's didn't buy large quantities of fabric for quilts. They bought yardage for clothing and made quilts out of the left overs. The vibrant colors and the large quantities of fabric make me think it is fairly recent.

Don't take my work for it though. I am not an expert in any sense of the word.

pab58 04-02-2011 12:22 PM

Absolutely beautiful!!! Personally, I could never sell it. As far as your choice to sell it, that's up to you. It should live in a home where it is loved.

Jodie02b 04-02-2011 12:29 PM

I love this

Sienna's GiGi 04-03-2011 02:53 AM

Please please don't sell it. Consider it part of your legacy and your family history. It is beautiful. I agree with everyone else that you should get it appraised and tak it one step further and insure it too.

OmaForFour 04-03-2011 03:44 AM

You should NOT sell this and also should find out if it has a family history. HOWEVER, if you do decide to sell later on, please PM me.

justlooking 04-03-2011 04:24 AM

WOW, beautiful quilt!

quilt3311 04-03-2011 04:31 AM

Get an appraisal on it and then insure it. You have a treasure there. If its a family piece, please save it to pass on to future generations.

Be careful of the green... . It might fade easily.
Best keep it in the dark only for that reason, for now!
Goiogle : Quilt Appraisels - and pick out one nearest where you live. They ask you pay a fee for this service.
Yes, put a label on the back.
Use a piece of muslin and write everything you can think of with an indellible pigma pen on it, and sign it, and then applique it on.

Please do not sell that beauty! For a quilt that old, it is in wonderful condition! Do have it appraised! You might be surprised. Thanks for sharing this with us!

Bye_the_Bye 04-03-2011 07:34 AM

It's great that you have a beauty that is so old. I bet you won't have a hard time finding a buyer once you have it appraised.

malega 04-03-2011 07:38 AM

I could never sell it, it is so very beautiful.
