Here is a close up view of my grandmothers sewing box. She passed away in 1980 at 102. I have had it for about 15 years but never had a place to show it off. Now that I have a big sewing room:

(post with pics here http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-104199-1.htm )

I decided to take it out, dust it off and show it off!

She and Grandpa married in 1898. He took a small case with drawers and she lined it with some velveteen. He drilled holes in the bottom drawer and put a few pegs in it for spools of thread. Some of the needles are still in the glass tubes!! I included pics of all the drawers.

Oh My, what a treasure. Just beautiful, I wouldn't touch a thing. Love the vintage stuff.

And what a lovely storge chest, too!

quiltlonger 03-02-2011 11:46 AM

You have a gold mine there, cherish it always

shequilts 03-02-2011 11:47 AM

That makes me cry. It's so beautiful. I would only take items out to touch them and then put them right back. You have atreasure.

How wonderful you also have a bit of your grandfather in there too. And it was loaded! Some of those buttons may actually be made of shells. I find old buttons fascinating. That's a teasure to pass to future generations.

What a treasure! The patina on the chest of drawers alone is just wonderful but then to open it up to all those wonderful old implements too! what a goldmine. I would have been thrilled with just the case of drawers. So glad you shared it with us and so happy you got it because you obviously know its "true" value.

eparys 03-02-2011 12:08 PM

Thank you all - yes I will always cherish this and never change a thing. My aunt had it for several years after Grandma passed and decided that I should be the grandchild to have it!! It will go to my daughter who loves old things with a history!

How precious this is! I wish I had taken pics of my Grandma's sewing cabinet and caddy before I refinished and reorganized them. Her stuff dates from the 50's-60's mostly, but same style of putting things in little boxes and fitting them all together. Glad you've kept yours as is. So romantic to think of your Grandpa customizing it for her. Again, thx for sharing.

You are truly blessed to have something like that from your grandmother. It will bring you so much joy, just being able to look at it. It will make you remember all the wonderful times that you had with her.

What a wonderful treasure you have of both your Grandma and Grandpa.

She was like my Granny, always had things organized. It didn't rub off on me too much though.

Thanks for sharing.
