Thanks Christine. Years ago I took jewelry making classes at VisArts (back when they were called the Hand Work Shop), but have never taken any sewing classes there. Which one are you taking?

They also put on some fantastic shows in their gallery and I’m still kicking myself over having missed seeing their show on contemporary quilting this past year. Did you by any chance get to see it?

Thanks quilterpurpledog. I am a big fan of learning new techniques and then trying them out on experiments. Some of them just hang around in my samples box(es) forever. Others (like these) hang around for years before I can figure out a way to incorporate them in my work. The painted batting is an idea that I got from a Heather Thomas video on National Quilters Circle. The tie stabilizer was left over from making a tuffet for my cousin using her late husband’s ties. I liked the texture and decided to paint it to see what would happen. I started using the felting attachment after I realized that there was no way I could use all the yarn I’ve spun over the years nor could I spin all the roving I’ve accumulated... then I realized that the felting attachment could be used with other fabrics and fibers. All kind of a long winded way of saying that I spend a lot of time playing in my studio and asking myself “what would happen if I did xyz...”

Rob - I'm taking a garment sewing class but was also considering a new 4-week class in October called Art Quilt Studio taught by Julia Pfaff. She also offers a few other classes that look interesting.. shibori & indigo dying.. For a newbie like me these classes are appealing.

I did not actually visit the contemporary quilting exhibit but viewed the pics online - several interesting designs.

Are you planning to enter any of your work at the Fredericksburg Expo or Va Bch Quilt Week?

Julia Pfaff had a show at a gallery here in Richmond a year or so ago. The pieces she showed were ones where she had created digital images that were enlarged and printed on fabric which she then quilted. They were beautiful.

I don’t have anything entered in Fredericksburg, but I just got notification that a piece that DH and I collaborated on has been accepted into the Va. Beach show in Oct.

I think a class or two with Julia Pfaff would be a great experience - will have to pursue that. Congrats on the acceptance into Quilt Week. I'm hopeful you'll share a pic of your collaboration here for those of us who plan to attend. Best of luck to you!
