2014 guild magazine page challenge

1 Attachment(s)
Our guild had a challenge that is due at the upcoming Oct. meeting. In January, each person picked a magazine from a table. (no quilt related magazines). Next, a Number printed out in fancy and colorful font was passed out by the President.
The number we received was the page in the magazine we had to find. We tore out the page that matched our number.

Now for the challenge: Find inspiration from the page and make anything you wish...any size and any project quilting or non quilting related. My page was Home Depot Paint advertisement...What colors can you dream of?

The colors of nature inspired me to make a wall-hanging that is a flower basket(I hope you can see the basket)
Flowers color my world! I may add words at the bottom: Take time to smell the flowers or a monogram on the basket. What do you think...add something more or leave alone? Thanks for looking!

Love your piece. The only thing that I might suggest is to maybe cross hatch the basket to give it some dimension. Great job.

QuiltnNan 10-17-2014 03:55 AM

very nicely done and a great challenge.

Geri B 10-17-2014 04:11 AM

You gave a great imagination.....that follow thru from a Home Depot ad is brilliant......maybe tack down some small rickrack on diagonal to resemble the weave of a basket....just a thought

gabeway 10-17-2014 04:25 AM

You met the challenge.

Tartan 10-17-2014 05:21 AM

It looks cute the way it is but if you wanted a quote to add you could use...Bloom where your planted. I like the idea to add basket weave texture to your basket.

Just Jan 10-17-2014 05:38 AM

Very Pretty. I'd move the pink bud away from the handle so the handle shows more, and as someone else suggested, do some cross hatch quilting to draw more attention to the basket. When I first saw it, I thought it was a pretty plate until I read a response about the basket. But it is lovely and you did great work.

Homespun 10-17-2014 06:06 AM

That is wonderful.

Diane007 10-17-2014 06:29 AM

thanks for sharing thus great idea

grammysharon 10-17-2014 07:33 AM

I agree, the rickrack on the basket is a great idea!!! Love your piece as I am a flower gardener too!!!

What a great challenge! ...... nice to see something new and different.
PLease show us what that page looked like, so we can see how you flowed from the page to your finish.

What a unique project you have created.

Thank you for the idea! I did think about doing a cross hatch design on the basket ,too. The basket is upholstery and is very thick. Now that I have so many layers to stitch through, I was worried about that.
I will try stitching on scraps first and see how it goes.
Thank you!

Now that is an idea I had not thought of...using ric rac. That may be simpler than trying to stitch through all the layers to make a cross hatch.

The longer I look at something on my wall over time, the more embellishment I add to it. I thought about a butterfly and lady bug resting somewhere. Thanks for looking.

Sandygirl 10-18-2014 02:51 AM

Very pretty!! I love this idea!

So many great ideas from all of you!
I felt like the basket looked like a place mat! I may have to rearrange my flowers a bit. The photo doesn't show the dimension seen in person. The basket actually pops out from the background so its easier to tell its a basket.

Remember they sell buggie buttons too!

How creative you are. Look forward to seeing the page and the finished work. Your flowers are lovely. The whole thing is very pretty. BrendaK

Very Pretty.

A motto on the bottom would be a balancing addition--don't change anything else.

busy fingers 10-18-2014 11:15 AM

You met the challenge admirably. Very creative and pretty.

wildyard 10-18-2014 11:29 AM

I think I might move the pink flower above the blue one on the far right to below the blue one so it is kind of hanging over the basket, and that will show more of the handle. Adding some patches of basket weave stitching would help, but not necessarily needing to do the whole basket.

sandyfullmer 10-18-2014 05:54 PM

Cute idea! The 3D flowers are lovely, I too would add something to give texture to the basket. You must have a wonderful imagination to come up with this quilt from a paint add.

quilterpurpledog 10-19-2014 04:22 AM

The challenge was a really cute idea. I always appreciate an unusual approach to challenge quilts. You created a lovely piece. It is very pretty and stands on its own. Or, as others suggest, you could enhance it in some way. I think it is a clever quilt. Aren't you anxious to see what others came up with?

copycat 10-19-2014 04:39 AM

Here is the magazine page and number I based my flower basket project.

After receiving the magazine page and looking at the ad for paint, I was inspired to do a project about color: Mother nature's colors of Flowers in a Basket.

After ideas from you smart and talented quilters, I am going to rearrange the flowers so the handles of the basket show....and it doesn't look like a plate.:) I also plan to follow the advice of using ric rack to give the basket dimension.

Thanks for all your input. If 2 heads are better than one....then a whole bunch of quilters heads are better yet.:)

Yes, I look forward to seeing all the challenges and learn how the magazine page inspired them to make their projects

javin22 10-19-2014 05:16 AM

Nice job! That is so pretty.

#1piecemaker 10-19-2014 05:17 AM

You met the challenge head on! It turned out beautiful. I love the flowers. Maybe a little weave in the basket would be all that I would do to it. Its great!

mjhaess 10-19-2014 07:50 AM

That looks awesome..

MargeD 10-19-2014 09:03 AM

I like it. Great flowers. I agree with KittyD - cross hatching would give a little more dimension to the basket.

Kaat 10-19-2014 09:19 AM

So creative! Love it!

solstice3 10-19-2014 10:58 AM

Great creation

2 photos of ideas given to me to achieve the basket weave look

I auditioned the ric-rac and decided it was too busy looking. I decided to quilt the cross-hatch to achieve the basket weave look for the flower basket. Thanks for all your great ideas to try out.

I may rearrange the flowers at a later date to allow the basket handle to show up clearer.

I appreciate everyone's input.

I hung the basket quickly. I will re hang with command strips after the challenge reveal.

gramquilter2 10-19-2014 01:39 PM

Great job on the challenge, really like the cross hatch idea and I put beads on everything.

Oh I wouldn't change a thing. I don't think your design looks like a plate, I think it represents the top of the paint can. You did a great job of interpreting the advertisement.
