4 Charity Lap Quilts Done For Adult Senior Center

4 Attachment(s)
I just finished 4 lap quilts for our local Adult Senior Services Day Center. I did two in pink florals for ladies, and two in earth tones for men. They like to have them for the seniors while they are sitting in chairs or wheelchairs during the day. I don't know the name of this pattern, but it is the easiest one I have, and is my 'go to' pattern for charity quilts.

Jeanne! How sweet of you! I am sure they will be so well received at the home.

Very nice lap quilts! What size do you make them? What do you put on the back? I was told that flannel was best as it did not "slip" off of their laps so easily.

QuiltnNan 09-29-2014 02:40 PM

nicely done

QUILTNMO 09-29-2014 03:17 PM

They're beautiful! It's amazing how the change in fabrics gives a whole new look. I'm going to give this pattern a try.
Thanks for sharing.

I made these 42x50--they cover the lap and down to the feet--not too big or bulky to be used by someone sitting in a wheelchair. I used a muslin backing, but think the flannel idea is a great one!

Great job on these lap quilts. Someday when I am in a rest home, I hope somebody as generous as you comes along with wonderful lap quilts. God Bless You.

Brenda, I don't have a name for this pattern but it is the easiest pattern I know to make because all of the pieces are the same size--2 1/2" x 6 1/2", so all the cutting is 2 1/2" WOF strips. 4 strips of fabric 'A' and 1 strip of fabric 'B' will make six blocks. I sew one WOF strip set together: A-B-A, then crosscut this 3-row set into 6 pieces 6 1/2" inches long. Then crosscut the remaining two A strips into twelve 6 1/2" pieces, sewing one to the top and bottom of each 3-row piece and you have a completed rectangle block that is finished size of 6"x10". Let me know if this doesn't make sense. I sew in vertical rows as I like to stagger the blocks so there are no seams to match!

Great job. What size do you make them? I was wondering because I would like to make some for Euless, TX.

What a great and generous thing to do. They are fantastic, and I really love the darker quilts for the men. Having spent 5 months in rehab 2 years ago, I can attest that when you are sitting in a wheelchair, a nice lap quilt comes in handy.

solstice3 10-01-2014 05:03 PM

Very nice!

i made them approx 42"x 50". About crib size. If they are tru sit-down lap quilts they shouldn't be much longer as they don't want them dragging on the ground and getting tangled up in wheels and others feet.

ccthomas 10-01-2014 07:23 PM

Thanks for sharing the instructions. I know what I will be doing with some scraps this weekend. Nice quilts.
