I received this from my Mom yesterday. There are no words to describe how I felt when I opened the Box. Mom also sent the story behind it: Her Granny had pieced tog the squares but she doesn't know when. Granny passed away before Mom's 10th birthday in 1949. The top was tucked away in my Grandma's ceader chest for a few years then she had the lady across the street put on the backing and quilt/tie it. Mom was in her teens at that time.

SWEET!! I, too, am a recipient of a quilt my great great grandmother made. It does grab you in the heart, doesn't it?!?!

erstan947 08-25-2010 06:32 AM

Me and your quilt are about the same age! The quilt is in much better shape than ME! Love it and treasure it. Thanks for showing us.

What a wonderful story!! What a great keepsake!! You are so lucky to have something from your Great-Grandmother.

gmasandee 08-25-2010 06:34 AM

I would love to use it but it is very fragile. A few of the squares are coming apart. It was all handstitched. I plan on putting it my ceader chest. Any suggestions for better keeping?

Touching hands across time, such a special thrill.

Cathie_R 08-25-2010 06:35 AM

What a gift! Don't you just love the old fabrics. To have someting that a family member made is precious. I'm working now on some blocks that my grandmother made. They are from the 30's or earlier.

dkabasketlady 08-25-2010 06:36 AM

Why not display it where you can see it and enjoy. If you put it in a cedar chest wrap it in muslin or put it in a pillow case so it won't me touching the wood as that could stain it. It also need to be taken out and refolded once in awhile so not to get fold lines.

lots of pretty colors in that 9patch, and lots of love too!

sueisallaboutquilts 08-25-2010 09:53 AM

I am so happy for you!! There is simply nothing like an old quilt, even better when it was made by a family member :)

SueDor 08-25-2010 11:49 AM

A beautiful keepsake.

Looking at the fabrics made me miss my grandmother.....and have a little cry, too. Thanks so much for the picture. If you have the wall space, I'd look into ways to stabilize it, maybe at a quilt museum site, and hang it. I wonder if you could also display it by having a large shadowbox with plexiglass to protect it. If you kept it out of the sun and refolded it periodically you'd be able to enjoy it everyday.
It's a wonderful gift. I'm very happy for you.......

rootyr 08-25-2010 12:43 PM

Ditter43 08-25-2010 12:44 PM

mom-6 08-26-2010 01:19 AM

I had my vintage quilts displayed on a wooden quilt rack in my bedroom. That way I could see them every day.

gmasandee 08-26-2010 03:05 AM

Thankyou everyone. I will be displaying my great granny's quilt. I have realized I can not put it away. I want to enjoy it everyday. Thankyou for your comments and tips.

Pamela Artman 08-26-2010 05:48 AM

Isn't it wonderful to have something made by your ancestors? I have a collection of 7 generations of quilts, from my great-great-grandmother to my granddaughters. It is my most prized possession.

aorlflood 08-26-2010 06:08 AM

Beautiful quilt! :)

jljack 08-26-2010 02:51 PM

Gorgeous old quilt! And in great condition, which is really rare! A real treasure for your family.

ibeesewin 08-26-2010 02:52 PM

What a treasure..you are so lucky to receive this.

Luv Quilts and Cats 08-26-2010 02:56 PM

Really nice! I have some of those same fabrics in a quilt my grandmother had! I have the quilt now. It was put together by my grandmother's sister. I cherish it very much, and did not know my grandmother had it until she passed away and we were cleaning out her house. Everytime I see it, it reminds me of her. I never met her sister, her sister died before I was born. But I have neice who will inherit the quilt from me.

Colbaltjars62 08-26-2010 02:56 PM

What a wonderful gift you received from your Mom. I am so happy that you have something from your Grandmother that you can treasure always.

IBQUILTIN 08-26-2010 03:38 PM

I might suggest that you roll it, not fold it, and perhaps you would want it out on display

Lynneander 08-26-2010 04:05 PM

What an incredible treasure! Just imagine the fabrics and where they came from ... maybe even old clothing that was used for quilts. I can only imagine the wonderful stories that come along with that beautiful quilt. I know you will cherish it!

just_the_scraps_m'am 08-26-2010 04:13 PM

now THERE is a quilt that really represents a bygone era, a simple 9 patch--that is a really nice piece! how fortunate to have that for a keepsake...lucky YOU

Babs194068 08-27-2010 03:46 AM

Great quilt and what a wonderful story.

kajaza 08-27-2010 03:58 AM

Beautiful! I love it and what a treasure to have!!

quilt3311 08-27-2010 04:18 AM

Oh, so wonderful that you now have the quilt to cherish. I have quilts from both my grandmothers. One is a seven sisters pattern in red and white and the other a tied quilt similar to yours.

iqlt2 08-27-2010 04:44 AM

i would wrap it in acid free tissue paper and put it in a box
put tissue paper rolls where you fold it to prevent creases
re fold it a couple times a year

Psychomomquilter 08-27-2010 04:46 AM

what a memory! and history behind it

Chatfield 08-27-2010 06:25 AM

Awesome! And it looks like it is in absolutely wonderful condition. Glad you received it.
