You're right...some are not flat. I haven't pressed them but since much of the fabric is polyester (or a blend), that won't help much. On the ones that are very bumpy, I think I'll use a high loft batting (or a double layer) and hand tie or machine tack them....that should keep some of the bumps from showing!

thanks for sharing a piece of yesteryear...
i can see why families don't want tops--especially if they don't sew---they don't know how to finish them!!

they are truly lovely & i'm sure they are now with the right caretaker! lots of work ahead of you, but the quilting will certainly improve & stabilize them..

as to them being wonky & not laying flat--
if they've been rolled up/folded for 20-30 years, it may be a good idea to lay or hang them out for a period of time so that they may straighten out--[sort of like if you hang clothing long enough the wrinkles come out...] JMHO

Thanks for the suggestion...they were stored folded in a cedar chest but they are not at all musty. As I get to them, I'll try hanging them out to see if that helps before I press them.

Wow!! What a nice gift! What do you think of making reversible quilts out of some of them because they are of all different colors? You could use 2 tops, that sort of match in pattern, or colors, one for the front and of course one for the back. Just a thought. :)
