I had real fun with this one - I didn't have any kind of print that would work in those little circles, so I hit on the idea of using a thick bleach and painting little circles to represent flowers on some of my plainer batiks.

I used a very fine artists paint brush - some worked better than others, so do a few spares, as they still might 'run' together. I know that there is a bleach pen on the market (Amazon have them) but I haven't tried one of them so this was my solution.

I let the bleach dry, then rinsed everything in cool water to get rid of any lingering bleach, before getting on with the applique.

grendelskin 03-18-2011 04:08 AM

Neat! I like your little bleach flowers!

coastienest 03-18-2011 04:19 AM

Looks good. Would love to see the others

Here I am again - I got so far with my posting this morning and then everything froze and I couldn't get back. So the remaining pics are here:

The centre circle is also a bleached flower

The back

Detail, I put embroidery round these circle (bleached) flowers to make them stand out. The pink 'Mums' are a recular quilting cotton, not a batik, but it was the only one I had that seemed to fit nicely.

Very innovative using the bleach. I must remember that idea.

Both blocks look beautiful.

sandpat 03-27-2011 04:48 AM

Again...both of your blocks are pretty...both very different! I love how the "bleach flowers" worked for you Lesley! Great idea!

Kathy...great fabric choices on this one! Love it!

debcavan 03-27-2011 04:52 AM

Wow and Wow. It is pretty. Gorgeous colors. I just starred at it for the longest time. There were so many things to take in.

I didn't have the same type of fabs to use that Aie had, nor was I smart enough to do the bleach thing like Lesley...so this was my choice (along with some help from DH)

Lesley and Patti, you both amaze me. those are gorgeous.

Butterflyspain 03-28-2011 04:06 AM

I love those blocks, so innovative with that bleach tecnique. I like what you have done Lesley but might it not weaken the fabric?

I know what you mean, Elle, we are always told that, but my bleach wasn't on there for more than about half a minute, and then I thoroughly rinsed them, and washed with a little dishwasher soap, so I can't think I have done lasting damage somehow.

Patti, I love your colours/fabric choices.

candi 03-28-2011 12:26 PM

You ladies are doing a fabulous job. I am almost beginning to feel guilty for thinking I can do this

Butterflyspain 03-28-2011 12:31 PM

No no no, you mustnīt feel like that Candi. Just wait till you start you will find it is very easy to get the hang of it.

I sure hope I can do it justice, Elle. What you ladies are producing is just fabulous!

Butterflyspain 03-28-2011 12:38 PM

You will do just great. Its a learning curve, I have never done needleturn before so I have developed my own method. using freezer paper, it works a dream.

sandpat 03-28-2011 05:17 PM

I can't believe that what little bit you are doing with the bleach is damaging anything Lesley. Besides...by the time it starts to disentigrate...we'll all be like Elle said.......loooong gone. :D:

Sounds as if your broadband speed is a bit slow at the moment. Can you check it?

Butterflyspain 03-30-2011 02:50 AM

Could be the broadband. Just changed my telephone provider and await new broadband so it could be the cause this one is about 4 yrs old.

sandpat 03-30-2011 04:35 AM

Clear your cache Elle....

Butterflyspain 03-30-2011 04:53 AM

What the heck is my cache....help havenīt a clue where that is

Thanks Patti

On the top bar in Internet Explorer, go to tools. Now click on Internet
options ( bottom on the list). Look under Browsing history and click
On Delete. On the tab that pops up, check temp Internet files. Click delete. You should do this periodically.

Finished this block tonight, funnily enough I just had enough thread for this one block, I also found a bit of pink that might do another. Thought I hud completely run out. These blocks take a lot of thread.

Very, very pretty, Elle. You are going great guns on these blocks now.

Butterflyspain 03-30-2011 01:49 PM

Thank Judy, I will have to stop in a while though as I am running out of the black Kona, I know I can get that easy, but will have to order it and at the moment piggy bank is a bit low. I must get back to DJ before I order any more fabric.

Lacelady 03-30-2011 02:28 PM

Nice one Elle, love the colours, but then I don't think I've seen a block that I didn't love the colours. I am convinced you can use almost anything and it looks good - this quilt is a great design for that.

Butterflyspain 03-30-2011 03:27 PM

Thanks Lesley, I have since stitched around the circles I think it looks better it brings them out a bit better.

fred singer 03-30-2011 04:03 PM

very good job on all of them ver pretty too

sandpat 03-30-2011 04:09 PM

Gosh....that one is so pretty too Elle! Everyone's blocks are simply gorgeous! I'm working on 17 tonight. At least I'm on to the larger pieces so it will go faster.

I sewed down a set of funky cats for the swap today...I was just sewing along and then...hmmmmm....machine didn't sound right. I stood up to look and found that I somehow had wound about 17 miles of thread around the hand wheel on the top right end of the machine. GRRRRRR.....my "still rough" hands must have snagged it when I reached behind the machine for something (I'm terrible about leaving the spool sitting there with the tail loose when I change thread colors). GRRRRRR!! So..undid it and stopped for the day. Gawd..I'm an idiot!!!!

I'm finding that the board is pretty slow right now Elle, so it might not be all your computer. Give them time to fix it...then maybe you need to clean up some other areas of your machine.

Oh, Patti, I feel for you. I have done that a couple of times. I really try to be careful, but sometimes things just happen. The first time I couldn't get it apart to get the thread out so had to take it in for servicing, but now I know how to take care of it myself, thank Heavens.

Finished my #16 block except for the center. I'm not sure what I'll put there. I'm thinking about scanning and enlarging one of the pieces I used for the flowers and printing it on fabric, but haven't made up my mind yet, maybe the green piece.
